Zoid Graphics - Helic Vs. Dark Army Notes
"New Century" is the same Japanese phrase as in the title of the /Zero anime, and is found on the catalogue pictured here. This catalogue came with early Zoids from the Dark Army storyline, but oddly enough, not my Deadborder, which had the Horn Vs. Gunbluster one. Scan is thanks to Darth Tom. Also see the original full-size scan, around 1.2mb.
These summaries, on the other hand, are all my fault.
Major characters
Evil Emperor Guylos: Power-hungry, ruthless, and clever. Likes kidnapping people and threatening to kill them to get his way, absorbing armies, and kicking puppies. Also seems to have claws...
(Hans?) Störmer: Has a German name that Rick can't type. Dramatic yet very intelligent, and a damn good pilot of stompy doom things. Starts out an idealist wanting to rebuild the empire Zenebas has run into the ground, ends up rather angry and wanting to destroy the Republic Army flat-out. Seems to have a thing for Elena.
Elena Muroa: Zenebas' daughter, and despite her fate not exactly helpless and definitely smart, considering who she grew up around. Still doesn't get to do much "on-screen" except get kidnapped. Sucks to be her. Elena apparently is Camford in the NJR, though, so she has the last laugh.
Shuu Isaac: My dictionary also suggests Siu for his name, but I went with the spelling that I thought looked better until I can get proper evidence either way. A cheerful (or perhaps just stubborn in an optimistic way) scientist turned fighter, and pretty good at both. Seems to have a thing for Gunbluster.
The pic at right is by Aardy. Blame online translators, is all I can say. The babelfish/excite confusion with "cancer" and "gun", for the curious, comes from the fact that 癌 (cancer) is read がん gan, and Gunbluster is ガンブラスター: ganburasuta-.
Locations and other important things
Empire Army refers to the (now former) Zenebas Empire, not Guylos. His forces go by "Dark Army".Zi actually goes by "Zoid-planet" in old stuff, but given its later renaming and most people knowing it by that name, I change it. Zoidians are the same - originally going by things like Zoid-planet-people.
Deochalcum is a material found in Dark Continent rocks that makes Dark Zoids glow-they use it as energy. Likely a play on the legendary Orichalcum.
Bloody Gate: It's a gate, you bloody idiot. Actually, the only way into the Dark Continent, it's a bunch of stabby rock pillars of doom with a huge swamp ahead of them.
Devil's Maze: A bleak area, full of grey rock with nasty mazelike chasms that easily confuse enemies. Not fun to fight in.
Godcry: A really big valley near shore (past the nasty swamps) that leads into the maze-y bits in the interior of the Dark Continent, later used by the Republic as a location for a base.
Triangle Daras: A nasty bit of ocean with electromagnetic storms that block out radio communication. Friendly. Post-meteor, the Triangle Daras grows so large that it results in fighting on the Western Continent rather than both forces trying to cross it. Could also be Dalas, Dallas...
Other characters worth noting
(or maybe I'm just obsessive)Bird: Shuu's lieutenant. Piloted a Saly F2...when Störmer attacked in Gilvader. He's not mentioned after that point. I suspect he's either dead or writing odd letters home.
Big John: A kid spy/scout, not the CSS bug-hunting guru. He used the fact he looked harmless to get critical and obvious info like "Guylos kidnapped the princess" and "Deadborder goes splat if you cut the tubes".
