Shadow Fox

The Shadow Fox seems to be one of the more popular models. I've seen a lot of them on eBay. I got mine from HLJ for 1000 yen (about 8-something dollars) plus shipping. The Shadow Fox is a wind-up Zoid, and thus doesn't need any batteries. I suppose you could let it carry one around in its mouth if you really wanted to, but what purpose that would serve, I don't know. Maybe I shouldn't be writing these things when I'm this low on sleep... The Shadow Fox comes in a smaller box with lots of pretty pictures on it, one of which I seem to remember having both Jäger and Schneider-wearing Liger Zeros. Perhaps Bit is stuck in a temporal anomaly, and there's two of him for now :p. (well, it's actually the Ray/Lightning/whatever Force, but that's less interesting.) It isn't that large, but there's a good amount of smaller parts.

Assembly wasn't hard, although it was a bit fiddly, since there were lots of small pieces in areas like the head. By the way, be careful with those pieces that form the head-they're fine once all together, but the ones on the side have one spot that's thinner. One of mine has a lighter line where it got bent...but it held its shape and didn't break, so all is well. The gold cockpit cover was molded in another color and painted, which is annoying, since even if you're really careful, you're left with a mark on one part of it. I think they should have made that part separately, like they do with the clear orange ones. Also, if I move the jaw around too much, the head pieces get a bit loose and I have to push them back together. The head itself has some articulation-it can move side to side a bit, and up and down, and the mouth can open and close. Unlike my Command Wolves which all have harder-to-open jaws, the Fox's moves easily. Its eyes are a nice orangey-red color.

The tail has a flap that folds down and holds a tail gun, which is also used to wind the Fox up. The tail can be moved up or down into three different positions. The legs were easy to assemble, although I had to push to get some of the gold things over the paws on all the way. Then came the cannon on its back...which has more small pieces, and has to be lined up carefully so that it'll spin when you turn the things on its side. Once complete, it can turn around, and the whole thing can be moved up and down somewhat. You can supposedly put other cannons and weapons and stuff on there, but I like the way the current one looks.

Shadow Fox walks pretty well, although I find the tail gun harder to wind it up with than the plain wind-up things on, say, a Command Wolf. Speaking of which, Shadow Fox walks a bit less far than my Wolves, probably since it's a bit heavier. It's hard to wind up two things at once (while the second one's being wound up, the first is attempting to escape across the floor), so I can't really compare them speed-wise.
