Leogator (Hasbro variant)

Out of the mysterious Hasbro Zoid mobs that have made their way to the UK, Leogator seems the most annoying to find. I looked all over bits of London and Newcastle and found not box nor sprue of this blasted thing, not even amid the small swarms of Jet Falcons, Gigas, and Seismos haunting the toy department of the local Fenwick's. But another nice person in the UK (whose name I will omit lest people annoy them) found me one, so I was saved from going crazy.

Why not just get the Tomy Leogator, you say? For one, I like the colors better on the Hasbro one. For two, the darn thing's too expensive. Leogator was apparently £9.99 here and is 1980 yen in Japan...about even, but then there's the shipping. Plus it's all fun and obscure...

Speaking of the colors, Leogator is a medium-light grey , royal blue, and a slightly shinymetallicreflective off-white. The motor is clear charcoal and the caps are bright Hasbro El-armor red. (It seems contrast-y caps on cats is all the rage.) This looks very nice, although I wouldn't say it's Mk.II-ish unless one could add gold bits like guns.

Leogator builds more like a Blox-stick bits together, stick bit onto body. It isn't very Blox-y when it comes to articulation, as it can't really be posed. It also just has the transform block and a core one...empire with republic block again. Technically wrong, but it matches the caps, so there. It's not very hard to build at all, nor does it have a lot of small pieces. Once you have the various bits together, it's pretty easy to figure out the lion mode. I didn't bother with the other one...pointy cat, and all that. The missile launcher just looks silly. It's bulky, yet carries one little blunt-tipped missile with a weak poke-the-missile launcher? I took it off, and Leogator looks better for it...although now I need to figure out some guns.

The walk is what you would expect for low-power one-piece legs. Not horrid, not that good. Kind of grade-up-y. Leogator wobbles along at a good speed, though.

Looks-wise, it's kind of gimpy...ugly in a charming way. It seems to be smiling. If you're not a pointy cat fan, you probably won't like it. Its jaw reminds me of Ray Saurer and its head has shades of Lidier, whitle its feet remind me of something I can't place and Command Wolf and maybe Rayse Tiger. I'd say it's worth picking up if you like one of the critters it can transform into and it's not horribly expensive, but I wouldn't pay a lot for it either. Hasbro Dimetra Ptera still rocks the transform Blox-y world.
