Phenotype's Zoids Forum 2007 Custom Contest!

Phenotype's Zoids Forum is one of the larget living English-speaking Zoids communities, and every year we hold a custom contest. This year, Pheno was busy and asked the mods if they could handle things - I volunteered.

For those unfamiliar with the contest, it amounts to this: You have six weeks. You must build your custom in that amount of time without beginning early or using chunks of customs you've already made. A Zoid must be used as the base, and entries must be painted so they're a coherant whole (ie no straight-up Blox bashes unless you paint the component critters to match).

Things are kept under wraps (posting teasers/pics of your entry early is considered a disqualification, as it may influence voting) until a few days after the entry deadline, then posted online for forum members to vote. Previous years had one winner and runner-ups, this year's contest features three winners in the categories of structure, painting, and story with a final Best in Show chosen by overall votes.

Story: The Crimson Shadow Liger was a special type of Liger created for night and shadow stealth combat. His dark color and high rate of monuver ability allow him to move quietly through the shadows or darkness of the night. He has sensors that range for miles and has a special radar cockpit. His sleek design help him move around more swiftly than other Zoids. The Crimson Shadow Liger has all of the new technoligies to help in Close range, and long range combats.

Story: Members of the Law immortalised Voassyr Valentino in perfidious memories as the Betrayer that dealt a near lethal blow to the Law's naval prowess. Citing a pretentious self-righteousness, Voassyr deflected to the Side of the Republic during the battle at Lake Agincourt. It is then that it is clear that Voassyr is a spy that was bidding his time all alone while learning the most intimate secrets of the Law. Not much is known about Voassyr except that his accent place him somewhere in the war torn fringes of the Republican capital. Joining the Law at a young age, he rose up the hierachy thorugh brutal and sometimes illegal means. His greatest achievement is to make it into the Inner Circle, where members weld frighteningly powerful Zoids like Abyssal Spiner and Treachery Liger.

The oceanic horror, Wraith Bane, was assigned to Voassyr. It is a death machine designed to spread the blight of the Law across the planet's vast oceans. Fully loaded in firepower, this leviathan now bears new colours of the Republic. Promoted to Admiral by the Republican President, Voassyr commands the nation's most elite naval fleet to perform blitzkrieg operation out in open sea. The Wraith Bane boasts peerless nautical grace, making it an ideal and indisposable surgical tool to be used to remove enemies from within and without. If the original Hammerheads are heralds of naval domination to the Republicans, the Wraith Bane is the undisputed testament of said power.

Moshii's Relinquo Vir

Story: The Relinquo Vir was originally an Imperial zoid belonging to the Zenebas Empire, under Commander James T. Markus. It was originally built as standard Energy Liger, then when the Zenebas Empire fell, Markus led a small group of Zenebas pilots with their zoids in a small revolution against the Helic Republic. To set them selves apart from their former Empire, the group personalized all their zoids to fit each pilot's style.

Markus had his EL modified for higher speed and melee attacks, which were his specialty as a pilot. As are most personal zoids, the RV was built exactly to Markus' specifications.The name Relinquo Vir was adopted by the pilot for the zoid after running across a worn dictionary found in the mouintains of the west continent.

Notes: Oi. My biggest, hardest, and most difficult custom to date. This is my first time painting: caps, clear parts, the pilot, custom made parts(also a fisrt), and using chrome paint. This thing took a total of about 10-16 hours, depending on who's counting. It cost about...$27-$35. It was an old Hasbro EL I picked up a while ago for about $7. My zoids live in their own little world. The continents are as I want them, not they really are. My story. I will finish it later. Then all will make sense.

Story:

Rasen Wolf, a new born

It's been seven years since the Bio-Tyranno has been defeated and thus the Genesis wars have all come to a complete stop as peace was given for these past seven years, until now. During the third month of the seventh year, an attack occurred at the Langstag Division where Langstags were being mass produced as some mysterious zoid destroyed the entire division leaving flames and smoke behind.

After two months later, our previous heroes were missing except Ra kan and his sword wolf. There were other attacks that occurred on divisions or bases that consisted of large amount of zoids where no zoids survived. Until Ra kan decided to find out about this mysterious powerful zoid. During his search he discovered that all his friends had met their ends after facing the mysterious zoid. As Ra kan was returning back to his village to inform them the news of the lost allies, he only came to find that the village was in flames reaching it’s final moments. Though as much sorrow that was brought to him, in his sword wolf was the mysterious zoid fronting him as his vision was blocked due to excess smoke.

Unnoticeable, the Mysterious zoid was there charging it’s ultra bio-particle cannon at Ra kan. With trifle time, Ra kan caught on to what was happening as the smoke clears, he deploys his blades with a shock to what he sees. In deep shock he forgets himself as before him stands a fusion of a bio-volcano and bio-tyranno, something that should have never been created. In a lost world, the Tyravol (fusion name) fires the ultra bio-particle cannon at Ra kan, leaving Ra kan in flames. Luckly, as for Ra kan, the Tyravol, an unmanned zoid, leaves his opponent alone once it's in flames thinking it is defeated.

Ra kan, alive but nearly dead and so is the sword wolf were both rescued by some team of Special Forces who are secretly hunting and collecting data on the Tyravol. For Ra kan was taken care of and safely recovering, but for the sword wolf, another core was placed in and special modifications were made to it. Using all the data collected from the Tyravol, the S.F. managed to upgrade the sword wolf to a whole new powerful zoid that will meet the expectations of the Travol. Due to enhancement of the wolf and the lost of its original pilot, there was a need for a pilot.

Akiro Aceman, major of the S.F. was chosen for the new zoid called Rasen wolf. The Rasen wolf had the speed of Hayate liger and the blade power of Mugen liger as a great combination that will respond to a variety of battles. Finally, Akiro as chosen pilot who specializes in high speed combat will be perfect for the Rasen wolf as he uses them to master this new zoid and will use them against the Tyravol leaving the future of our next generation of heroes in a mystery.


Lionel's Langosta: Winner, Best Structure category

Weapons/Equipment: Long and short range torpedos (x6), two short turets to defend the head, two front beam guns, two big back beam guns for long range back attack, two short little tail machine-guns for rear defense, and an hidden body turet that can cover both sides. He is also carrying in his body a little Attack Zoid used as a spy : Krhill.

Story: Long ago after the end of the battle on Zoidstar, some Zoidaryan colonies survived the war, with some alive Zoidaryans at their heads. One of those colonies was an hidden glacial and toxic planet named Serna, in another universe, ruled by Red Zoidaryans. Those Zoidaryans had lost contact with their planet Zoidstar, and were unable to come back to their world. This was lasting for centuries, and the Red Zoidaryans spent this time to build again Zoids, to reconquer their lost Empire, and find a way to come back to their planet. Then were born Gorder, Stundra, Zarox, Guaruder, Iron Kong MK3 and many others. The conquest was about to be launched, when something was brought to the Red Zoidaryans attention : in a reconnaissance mission, a familiar mecha signature was spotted on another lost planet. It was a Blue Zoid ! A Blue collony survived too, and was living on this planet. The Serna Zoidaryans couldn’t allow to have a Blue faction in this universe, even if it wasn’t sure that they were dangerous. So two missons were going to be done : one, lead by Iron Kong MK3 that will come back on Zoidstar and regained the lost Empire (this was a story I made in 1998 in several comics), and another launched on this little Blue colony, on this planet named Nemtu.

Nemtu was a planet of water and islands. There was nowhere large mainlands (like on Earth), and the Blue Zoidaryans were living on those islands, inside big cities, sometimes built on several neighbouring islands. The Red Zoidaryans choosed to build sea Zoids to begin, the Blue Zoids of Nemtu were only labours ones, and there was only two little Zoids, looking like the old White Heads conquistadors to protect the planet. The Red Army will have to be able to fight in those seas. Then was sent Kraken. Other sea Zoids were created, two crab-like Zoids : Zeherl MK2 and Sea Spider. With those three Zoids, the Red army could attack Nemtu and destroy towns and instalations without encountering resistance. But the Blue Zoidaryans were very well developped on this planet, better than the Reds from Serna, where the planet air was toxic for the inhabitants that had to live under a dome. The priority was to find a Zoid that can counter Kraken. Then Langosta was born.

All in this Zoid was thought to be Kraken opponent. It was not possible to do a Zoid as big and fast than the big squids, so all was made for Langosta to resist against any attack. His armor is enough strong to bear Kraken hold, and the Zoid has enough strengh to escape when he is caught. He is also over-weaponed to bear any short and long range attack, even from several opponents. His secret abilities is his antennaes, which can send electronic waves around him, that could be enough strong to alterate all kind of view and radar systems of other Zoids.

Adamassc's Reapspawn

Fuselage Explanation:The Reapspawn is the result of several rushed attempts by the Helic Republic to create an effective aquatic defense against the new wave of imperial seafaring zoids. Lightly armored, barely mobile, and equipped with only the most base of weapons, it is difficult to believe that such a small zoid could be considered a threat to anything.

What makes the Reapspawn an effective weapon is the combination of its inexpensive production cost and its effective autopilot. These facts, combined with its massive power output, make the Reapspawn a lethal suicidal fighter. The Reapspawns move in masse, softening up large targets with their missles, before finally digging into the armor with their Counter Sythes and detonating, each one resulting in a 10 megaton explosion. This blast is rivaled only in power by the Zenevas Cannon weiled by Seismosaurus units.

After only a few encounters, the Empire quickly learned the danger of these unmerciful zoids. Imperial pilots know full well to retreat quickly when the Reapspawn come into view and hope to destroy them from the maximum range they can muster. It is at long range where the Reapspawn suffers most. It's missle pods are only as effective as those found on the Sheild Liger, and it carries no other ranged weapons. This, combined with it's dismal speed, requires the Reapspawn to be right against it's enemy to be at its most lethal.

Note: The Counter Sythes actually rotate higher than I left them for swimming, so they don't normally block the missles.


Kaelin's Rush Wyvern

Fluff text: The ground war against the Hoelith Republic was going strong. However, against the Hoelith Air Force, the Izbaeli forces had hit a roadblock. The small Blox zoid, the Blaze Wyvern, was only equipped with weaponry to use against slower ground forces, like Cannontortoise or Helcat. So, a new unit was needed to compete against the high-speed attackers like Raynos and Storm Sworder. After months and months of development, a prototype was produced, utilizing all the top technology available. With advanced features such as adjustable wing platforms, the Rush Wyvern can switch from hypersonic flight to freefall in seconds, then ignite its ion boosters and take the enemy by surprise!

Burst Missiles with onboard rocket engines can be fired from a height of 60,000ft, and be on the target in seconds. Direct hits are unneeded, as the warheads set off an EMP and explode, raining molten shrapnel down on delicate components. The Rush Wyvern carries two of these rockets, one on each wing. Also equipped standard is the Gatling Cannon. Similar to the unit equipped on the Demantis units, but loaded with special energy rounds capable of firing at amazing speeds, this powerful gun can shred through an enemy fighter's wings like tissue paper! Reinforced alloy legs and gyrocaps allow the Rush Wyvern to land with ease on even the roughest terrain. This zoid has become affectionately known as the 'White Bird' because of its coloration and use as the staple of the Izbaeli Airforce.

D00mLiger's Gravity Kaiser (aka Gravity Saurer Mk. II)

Background:
Originally, the Gravity Kaiser had been the Gravity Saurer, a zoid modeled after the earlier Guylos Geno Saurer and Deadborder, developed in the last year of the Helic-Neo- Zenebas war. Incorporating new Gravity Wheel technology, the zoid could carry thick armor and a large arsenal, and move at a decent speed, perfect for the reclamation of former Guylos territory. However, the conflict ended before the Gravity Saurer could be deployed in large numbers. Despite this, the design proved quite effective against Neo-Zenebas Zoids and Blox.

In ZAC 2035, hostilities began again, with Guylos and Helic again opposing Neo-Zenebas. Imperial engineers went back and revamped the Gravity Saurer design, improving speed, maneuverability, and melee capability, while retaining the effective arsenal and strong armor. The reworked Gravity Saurer was renamed the Gravity Kaiser and deployed en masse, proving its worth on the battlefield.

Armament:
The Gravity Kaiser boasts an impressive armament, especially considering its size. The pride of its arsenal are the Twin Panzer Fausts, a pair of large missiles that detonate and create a localized gravitational field, much like the Gravity Cannon of the Deadborder. Mounted below the Panzer Fausts is a pair of AZ Pulse Particle Rifles, designed to do damage at long range and stil maintain a high rate of fire. Supporting these are two Hyperbeam Cannons, which are capable of heavy damage at any range. This array is designed to quickly destroy anything directly in front of the Gravity Kaiser. Mounted to the chest of the zoid is a Dual Particle Cannon, capable at any range but best used for close-range combat.

Its melee capabilities are no less impressive. Mounted to the feet of the Gravity Kaiser are three Gravity Strike Talons each, all of them long and sharp. They can also be charged with energy from the zoid's Gravity Wheel System, drastically increasing their destructive capacity. Likewise, the zoid has two Graviton Claws as its hands, which can also be energized, along with its Gravity Fangs. The zoid's tail is also an effective weapon in close quarters, compensating for the Kaiser's lack of rotating or rear-facing weapons.

Aside from providing power for the zoid's weapons and systems, the Gravity Wheel System can be manipulated in various ways. It can use gravity energy to bend light and other energy away from the Kaiser, rendering it unseen on many sensors. It can also generate burst of gravity to crush opponents and divert incoming ordinance. The zoid is extremely maneuverable, and capable of long jumps from a standing start, thanks to the lift and propulsion provided by this system.

Gojulas Omega's Advanced Baron

Setting: During the war of Western Continent, high speed Zoids are very important for land battle for both Republic and Empire. The number of high speed Zoids is decrease since the war is start. Also, many of the high speed Zoids is lack of fire power. Because of these reasons, Republic has keep research and develops new high speed Zoids. Although Shield Liger DCS-J and Blade Liger are very powerful, it is very hard to control. Then, one develop team has a order to develop a high speed Zoids that has the same average power as Blade Liger, but it is easy to control.

The develop team has base on the King Baron from the last war. Although they can't re-build the King Baron since is lack of wild form of this Liger, Republic has keeps some of the King Liger's core. The develop team using this core and using many of Command Wolf's parts and new technology. After it's complete, it got the fire power that almost equal to King Baron and a much higher speed and Mobil ability. By calculation its average power is as high as Blade Liger. The develop team has give it a name called Advanced Baron. However, when it is complete and fully tested, the much powerful Zoids- Liger Zero has out, and Republic put most of the money and power to mass produce it. Advanced Baron has keeps in the Western Continent for research use.


Rantinan's Houndtrupen: Winner, Best Story category

Story:

What do you do when you're the best friend of a pink obsessed madwoman?

Morris Exposition was an average middle ranking singles fighter, whose only distinguishing feature from the hordes of hopefuls, wannabes, and somewhat skilled pilots in C rank was his old fashioned Lidier zoid. Then he met a wild woman in a pink gator and his life changed.

His first encounter with her was a one on one fight, where the wild girl's erratic combat style pressed him sorely, forcing him into close quarters combat. He won, but with damage to his zoid. Thus when his opponent offered to assist with repairs, he gratefully accepted, parts for Lidiers being few and far between. Over the next week while they worked on repairing their zoids, each found the other to be quite complimentary to her other, Morris’s cautious calculated approach to life nicely offsetting rainbows erratic enthusiasm. Their friendship grew over the next six months, their rankings improving steadily as each advised the other. As Rainbow improved, her grandmother, a former pilot and President of Smythe Arms, a zoid weapons manufacturer decided to form a company team. She recruited Rainbow and Morris to lead it.

With access to the large variety of technicians and customs weapons provided by their new corporate sponsor, Morris was debating his beloved Lidier to the garage and trade up for something much cheaper to maintain. Speed, firepower, a turret and heavy chest mounted weapons were his priority, so it was fortunate that the houndsoldier design had so recently been resurrected from obscurity. Of course there were some major problems with the houndsoldier. Its dependence on close combat, and its turret that could not shoot directly forwards, as well as the lack of grade up weaponry available on the open market made it less than attractive to the common z fighter. Morris reluctantly faced the facts that there was nothing else remotely Lidierish out there, and that he’d have to keep putting his ever increasingly fragile zoid on the battle line. Fortunately for Morris, Rainbow Smythe-Jones was a much better tech than a pilot.

She took a houndie, and began by removing the lances completely. She then re routed power from the grade up port through the turret, preparing for a massive upgrade.

2 huge boosters, and 2 even larger laser cannons were added to the turret. Her newly christened Houndtrupen was finally painted in Morris’s favourite silver, gunmetal and red colour scheme before being presented to the warrior as a 30th birthday gift.

So far his average in it is 4/1/1, with quite an improvement in individual points gained. Able to keep up with rainbow's Blade liger and run rings around her gojulas giga, the large rapid fire lasers give him the ability to lay out serious fire support from all ranges. They quickly entered Smythe Arms top 10 sales lists, and maintain high demand amongst pilots of zoids capable of sustained power output.

It seems what you do when you're the best friend of a pink obsessed madwoman is blow things up, sell product, and just occasionally act as the voice of sanity.


Scissorbreaker's Assault Scarab HA

Story: The Neo-Guylos Empire, lacking in flying zoids, decided to redevelope the Assault Scarab for high-altitude flight. However, the rise of the LPH Republic caused a greater need for more units, and thus, Neo-Guylos' resources were drawn very thin. So, the Assault Scarab AH (ASAH), after being developed, was not put into mass production, but a fleet of 200 were produced. A Whale King was customized to carry the whole fleet. The Assault Scarab AH's were placed on racks, upside down, in a large section of the Whale King's underside. During high-altitude battle, a large panel would slide open and the racks would release the ASAHs, which would promptly open their wings and engage their foes. The fleet fought many battles, never losing a unit, until the final great battle which brought an end to the LPH Republic. They attempted to destroy the Eisen Dragon, which quickly made quick work of several of them, sending their smoldering remains plummeting through the atmosphere below. The fleet immediately retreated.

Personal Notes: The ASAH is the result of two designs failing and desperate fumbling through mounds of zoid parts. I had to butcher a pteras' wings with my dremel (it was more fun than it sounds) and a command wolf canopy. I was originally going to use styrene, but it was just too hard for my poor little dremel to cut. I was lucky enough to find the pair of gunsniper blasters that I had forever. I wasn't sure what paint job to use, but I decided to go for the military look. AAAAAARRGH!!! The green paint turned out flat and the black paint sprayed out too quickly!!! oh, well. I think it turned out okay. It's not much for contest material, but at least it's an idea!

Blitzwulf's Agathus

Story:

ZAC 2099

During a Helic counter-offensive against Prozen, several seaports on the southern coast of the western continent are decimated. Homes and families are destroyed, the area is uninhabitable. The remaining people flee inland, hoping to find some peace amongst the violence dealt upon them...One young man stays behind.

That young man was named Ranson Agathus. Haunted by visions of carnage and destruction, Ranson has now taken it upon himself to "cleanse" the sea of his attackers. Agathus is loyal to none, save himself, and now that he has excavated and repaired a powerful ocean zoid, his vengeance is finally at hand.

Ranson had trouble controlling the zoid when he first put it to sea, he then realized that conventional controls would never work to manipulate its eight powerful arms, and erratic bursts of speed. He then devised a way to link the zoid with his own brain using neruo-technology, giving him complete control with the mere thought of it. This makes for a deadly combination, as Ranson’s own emotional turmoil and anger send himself, and the Agathus into a warring frenzy.

History: The President of the Helic Republic was still in shock over the report; three Ultrasaurus destroyed, two severely damaged, all in one attack... all by one Zoid. Though the existence of a super-weapon code-named Tsunami gnawed at his board of military affairs, General Graive assured them that the threat, though dire, was limited to within striking distance of the sea. The real threat would be the enemy's move to capitalize on the loss of five heavy command Zoids and their support units.

The new chassis was to be an ankylosaurus; leaner, faster, more heavily armored and would possess superior firepower. Excess weight and damaged components reduced to scrap. Without the neck and huge base tail section the Zoid's weight was greatly reduced and speed increased. Further, the physical combat capability was greatly enhanced with a surround of hardened alloy spikes sheathing the 150mm rail cannons, six energized impact blades and the massive tail hammer; a pair of enhanced gravity cores sealed within 40cm of dense armor plating. This weapon alone weighed more than 40 tons and was capable of crushing a Redhorn to scrap in a single blow. The huge 360mm cannons were dorsal turret and 150mm rail guns arrayedt, granting the Zoid redundant 360 degree arcs of firepower. Finally the Zoid mounted the AEGIS System; Arrayed Enhanced-Gravity Integrated Shield. While not as powerful as the force field generators of the Shield Liger, the 12 nodes worked together to slide attacks away from a direct hit. Further, the new machine could open fire with the system engaged as the weapon muzzles reached outside of its limited envelope.

The new machine was designated RBOZ-030 and was named the Paladin; an powerful warrior of good blessed for a worthy battle. The first unit was piloted into battle by General Graive himself, but it was the #12 Paladin, built in the 12th month of production signifying ADI’s first successful year, that was dubbed "Helic's Hammer." The mighty #12 was also destined to be the best and longest lived of the line.

Ped's Iron Kong Shogun: Winner, Best Paint category

Story: After emerging from the ravages of war, the Empire and Republic agree that never again shall their conflicts result in such great losses of life and property. Hence, their leaders signed a blood pact that would be known as the treaty of champions. Hence forth, whenever a conflict arises, the matter would be resolved not through total war, but through a succession representing each side. Said battles would be governed by a strict set of rules and a code of honor among warriors. All mass destruction weapons such as CPC’s are totally outlawed. As the republic and the empire are subdivided into separate independent cities and regions, each region is represented by its own champions, where these Zoids are the culmination of their technology and ideals.

For the Empire, its principal Champion is the Iron Kong Shogun. Wielding its twin swords, Dragon Slayer and Typhoon, it is a most formidable warrior. With its nearly impregnable armor, the mere sight of it is often a deterrent for conflict. Its weapons are a marvel in themselves.

Dragon Slayer- This deep red sword is infused with Zoid Magnite and laser enhanced. It is the perfect close range weapon and makes easy work of any zoids armor.

Typhoon- Using the power of wind and ice, this sword doubles as a medium range weapon, with its ice attacks.

While individually, the 2 swords are already formidable, they are most effective when used in succession as a series of sub zero and extreme heat attacks enable the shogun to penetrate the most formidable defenses as long as it manages to get into close range.

Ion booster pack- designed for limited propelled flight with bursts of speed. Effective close combat booster designed to compensate for the immense weight and mass. The boosters propel the zoid in almost wrecking ball fashion and enable it to deliver its powerful sword attacks.

Charlie's Dktahg

Weapons/Equipment: Additonal special metal weapons used to pierce bioraptors on the pincers and stinger

Story: From a small seaside village, a young man in his maccurtis tries to catch up to his father piloting a Death Stinger. They would go out from their village into the nearby rocky mountains to dig up a new metal allow recently discovered by the local miners. These mountains has been their longtime natural defense against intruders as they believe that they have very little precious items.

Suddenly, they were attacked as Bio Raptors came out to ambush them on their path. The Death Stinger fought on to hold them off, but was quickly subdued by the large number of enemies. The maccurtis in a futile attempt tries to help out, but is quickly swatted away. Gloating, one of the Bio Raptors took the maccurtis and instead of detroying it, decided to maim it instead. Its front claws were cut off, and twisted its tail before flinging it to the dying Death Stinger. The Bio Raptors left them to go off to attack their village.

The pilot of the maccurtis survives and comforts his father as he lay dying inside the decaying Death Stinger. Honoring his fallen parent, the young man takes the core of the Death Stinger and fuses it with his fallen maccurtis. Taking all he had to the caves of the new metal, he buries his father, fashions new weapons from the site, and rebuilds his maccurtis from the remains into "Dktahg" blade of vengeance.

Regular Maccuritis weapons, but now includes two metal side blades, and a poisoned piercing stinger.


SV79's Arctic Fangs

Personal Notes: This is my first airbrushed Zoid for nearly a year. White and grey are used to replicate winter camouflage pattern. After priming, all armour pieces are airbrushed gray. Masking tape is used to marked out camouflage patterns. White is then airbrushed on. Battle damages are created using pen knife and router. Metal weathering is done using dry-brushing method with various shades of colors.
